Publish a material

Validate and publish a material for assignment.

The material author, a collaborator, an Admin, or an Owner can publish a material. Publishing creates a version that Admins and Owners can assign to learners.

Check the material before publishing

The publish dialog validates your material and highlights any issues:

Meet publish requirements

Complete the required overview and content fields:

  • Thumbnail: Add a cover image; use a 16:9 ratio when possible
  • Title: Add a descriptive title
  • Content: Add at least one module with one unit
  • Complete units: Complete the required content for every unit

Review validation

When you click Publish, Enlytning checks your material:

  • Highlights a missing thumbnail
  • Identifies incomplete units with specific errors
  • Links each error to the content that needs attention

Use the publish dialog

Click Publish in the editor header to open the publish dialog.

Review the dialog

Use the two sides of the dialog to review overview details and content:

  • Thumbnail preview: Shows the cover image or Add a thumbnail
  • Title and description: Lets you edit both fields
  • Summary stats: Shows Modules or Sections, Pages, Questions or Signatures, and Time
  • Content outline: Lists modules and units with validation indicators

Publish the version

Review the material, choose whether to notify people, and publish.

Select Publish in the editor header.

Review the thumbnail, title, optional description, summary, and content outline.

Fix any validation errors.

Choose whether to enable Notify assigned users.

Select Publish.

After a successful publish:

  • Admins and Owners see Go to assignment in the success notification
  • Admins and Owners can assign later from Manage > Material
  • The editable draft remains available for further changes

Version effect

The first publication creates Version 1, and each later publication creates the next version. Active assignments use the latest published version. Completed records keep the version that each learner finished.

Notify assigned users

Use Notify assigned users when publishing changed content or when collaborators need a publication notice.

In the publish dialog, enable Notify assigned users to:

  • Notify material collaborators on any publication
  • Notify current assignees when the material already has a published version
  • Tell recipients that new content is available

When to notify

Notify recipients about changes that affect their work. Skip formatting corrections that do not change meaning.

Fix publish problems

The publish dialog identifies the field or content that blocks publishing.

Fix a validation error

The publish dialog shows specific errors:

Expand the content outline to find flagged items.

Use highlighted fields and links to open the affected content.

Fix the issue and publish again.

If needed, select Ask Enlytning Agent to open Enlytning Agent with the error details.

Common validation issues include:

  • A missing title
  • A missing thumbnail
  • A material with no modules
  • A module with no units
  • A page unit with no content

Question-based units also have type-specific rules:

  • Single choice: 2 to 10 answer options, with exactly 1 marked correct
  • Multiple choice: 2 to 24 answer options, with at least 1 marked correct
  • Match: 2 to 10 match items
  • Ranking: 2 to 10 ranking items
  • Checklist: 1 to 10 checklist items
  • Executive signature: Upload a signature file

Agent context

Enlytning Agent receives the validation message and can help you locate the affected content.

What validation checks

Enlytning checks required overview fields and each module. A missing title or thumbnail, an empty module, or a missing required unit field can block publishing. The description is optional.

After publishing, see Assign published materials, Review and reuse material versions, or Export a material to PDF.
