Material Types
Understand the differences between courses, policies, and surveys.
Enlytning supports three material types, each designed for different training and compliance needs. Choose the right type when creating a material—it determines which units are available and how learners interact with the content.
Courses
Courses are for teaching and assessment. They combine informational content with questions to test understanding.
When to Use
- Employee training and onboarding
- Skill development programs
- Compliance training with assessments
- Product or process education
Available Units
| Unit | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Page | Rich content with text, images, video, and formatting |
| Single Choice | Question with one correct answer |
| Multiple Choice | Question with one or more correct answers |
| Matching | Pair related items from two lists |
Scoring
Courses track scores based on question performance:
- Each question contributes to the overall score.
- You can set a passing threshold when assigning.
- Learners can review their answers after completion (unless hidden).
Assignment Options
When assigning courses, you can configure:
- Passing score: Minimum percentage to pass (or disabled for completion-only).
- Max attempts: Limit retries before each deadline.
- Hide answer feedback: Prevent learners from seeing correct answers.
- Leaderboard: Show peer rankings based on scores.
Policies
Policies are for document acknowledgment and compliance. They present content that users must read and formally accept.
When to Use
- Company policies and procedures
- Regulatory compliance documents
- Terms and conditions
- Safety guidelines requiring acknowledgment
Available Units
| Unit | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Page | Policy content with text, formatting, and media |
| Signature | Capture the learner's digital signature |
| Executive Signature | Display an admin's pre-uploaded signature |
| Checklist | List of items the learner must acknowledge |
Signatures
Policies support two signature types:
- Signature: Learners draw or type their own signature to acknowledge the policy.
- Executive Signature: Displays a pre-configured admin signature (e.g., CEO or HR Director) as part of the policy. Admins upload their signature in Settings.
Assignment Options
Policies don't have scoring—completion is binary. Users either acknowledge the policy or they don't. Assignment options are simpler:
- Deadline settings (single or recurring for annual re-acknowledgment).
- No passing score or attempt limits.
Surveys
Surveys collect feedback and opinions. They're for gathering data, not teaching or testing.
When to Use
- Employee satisfaction surveys
- Training feedback forms
- Pulse checks and polls
- Event or onboarding feedback
Available Units
| Unit | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Page | Instructions or context for the survey |
| Single Choice | One selection from multiple options |
| Multiple Choice | Multiple selections allowed |
| Ranking | Order items by preference |
| Rating | Score on a numerical scale (e.g., 1-5 stars) |
Anonymous Responses
Surveys can be configured for anonymous responses:
- When enabled, you see aggregated results only.
- Individual responses cannot be traced to users.
- Useful for honest feedback on sensitive topics.
Assignment Options
When assigning surveys:
- Anonymous responses: Toggle to anonymize all submissions.
- Single deadline only (recurring not available for surveys).
Comparison
| Feature | Course | Policy | Survey |

| Scoring | Yes | No | No |
| Questions | Yes | No | Yes (feedback) |

| Anonymous option | No | No | Yes |

Changing Material Type
Material type is set at creation and cannot be changed afterward. If you need a different type, create a new material and copy the content.
This restriction exists because each type has different unit types and behaviors that aren't interchangeable.
