Path Builder
Build learning paths by adding steps, selecting materials, and configuring the learner journey.
The Path Builder is where you create the structure of your learning path. Access it by clicking Create from the Learning Paths page.
Path Details
Start by giving your path a name:
Title
Enter a clear, descriptive title (required, max 75 characters). This appears in the learner's queue and in reports.
Good examples:
- "New Employee Onboarding"
- "2024 Compliance Certification"
- "Sales Team Product Training"
Description
Optionally add a description to provide context about the path's purpose or contents. This helps other admins understand the path's intent.
Adding Steps
A learning path must have at least two steps. Each step represents one material that learners must complete.
Creating Steps
- The builder starts with two empty steps.
- For each step, click the Material dropdown.
- Search or browse your published materials.
- Select a course, policy, or survey.
- Click Add a new step to add more steps.
Materials are grouped by type (Course, Policy, Survey) in the dropdown for easy browsing.
Published Materials Only
Only published materials can be added to learning paths. Draft materials won't appear in the selection list.
Reordering Steps
Steps are completed in the order they appear. Currently, you can only set the order when creating steps—drag-and-drop reordering is not available.
If you need a different order, remove and re-add steps in the desired sequence.
Removing Steps
Click Remove on any step to delete it. You cannot remove steps if only two remain—paths require a minimum of two steps.
The Preview Panel
As you build, the right side shows a live preview of your path:
- Each step displays the material's thumbnail, title, and type.
- Conditions are indicated with a "Condition" label.
- Arrows show the flow between steps.
Use this preview to verify your path structure before saving.
Adding Conditions
Conditions let you create branching logic based on learner performance. They're only available for course steps (not policies or surveys).
When a course is selected, a Condition toggle appears. Enable it to configure the condition.
See Conditions for detailed configuration options.
Saving Your Path
When your path is complete:
- Click Save in the header.
- A confirmation dialog appears reminding you that paths cannot be edited after saving.
- Click Save path to confirm.
You'll be redirected to the Learning Paths list where you can assign your new path.
Plan Carefully
Once saved, you cannot modify steps or conditions. The only editable fields are the path's name and description. If you need to change the structure, you'll need to create a new path.
Best Practices
Path Length
- Keep paths focused—3-5 steps is typical.
- Very long paths can feel overwhelming to learners.
- Consider breaking complex journeys into multiple shorter paths.
Material Order
- Start with foundational content.
- Build complexity progressively.
- End with assessments or acknowledgments.
Using Conditions
- Add conditions to assessment steps where score matters.
- Use remedial content to help struggling learners catch up.
- Reserve "Fail path" for critical compliance requirements.
