Interpret material insights
Analyse course, policy, and survey activity with material metrics and course performance data.
Admins and Owners can use Material Insights to analyse an individual course, policy, or survey. In Manage > Material, select a material and click Insights.
Insight availability
Courses, policies, and surveys include Overview insights. Only courses include the Performance page and question-level assessment analytics.
Review the material overview
The Overview page summarises assignment progress, activity, and key metrics for the selected material.
Track assignment status
The assignment-status pie chart groups people by progress:
- Not started: Assigned but haven’t begun
- In progress: Started but not yet completed
- Completed: Finished the material
The centre displays the total number of learners, assignees, or respondents, depending on the material type.
Track activity over time
The Activity line chart tracks engagement over time with two metrics:
- Activity: Total learning events, including page views and interactions
- Active people: Unique learners, assignees, or respondents active each day
Toggle each metric on or off by clicking the legend buttons. Hover over the chart to see daily values.
Compare key metrics
Summary cards display:
| Material | Metrics |
|---|---|
| Course | Total learners, completion rate, average duration, pass rate, and engagement rate. |
| Policy | Total assignees, acknowledgement rate, average read time, and engagement rate. |
| Survey | Total respondents, response rate, average completion time, total responses, and engagement rate. |
Review open-question responses
If your course includes open-answer units, use Open Question Responses to:
- See each open question and total answer count.
- Filter responses by material version or view all versions.
- Open a question to read all submitted learner responses.
Review course performance
The course-only Performance page shows score distributions, question results, and individual learner performance.
Compare the success-rate distribution
The histogram groups learner scores into percentage ranges. Use it to identify score clusters and borderline results.
Compare success rate by question type
The bar chart compares success rates for single-choice, multiple-choice, matching, and other scored questions. Use it to identify formats with lower success rates.
Compare performance metrics
Summary cards display:
| Metric | Description |
|---|---|
| Average score | Mean assessment score across all completions. |
| Question confidence index | Percentage of questions with more than one attempt that have at least one correct and one incorrect response. |
| Average attempts | Average recorded answer attempts per question. |
| Most challenging question | The question with the lowest success rate. |
Review the Questions tab
The Questions tab lists every assessment question:
- Question: The question text
- Type: The format, such as single choice, multiple choice, or matching
- Respondents: The number of learners who answered
- Correct: The percentage who answered correctly, with a progress bar
Sort by any column to find questions with the lowest success rates or highest response counts.
Review the Individuals tab
The Individuals tab shows each learner’s results in a gradebook:
- Name and Email: Learner identification
- Started: When the learner began the course
- Question columns, such as Q1, Q2, and Q3: Percentage score for each question
This view helps identify learners who struggled with specific questions or patterns in question difficulty.
Export insight data
Export the Questions or Individuals data as a comma-separated values (CSV) file:
Exports are unavailable during a free trial.
Open the Questions or Individuals tab.
Click Export.
Download the CSV file.
Question exports include Question, Question Type, Total Respondents, Correctly Answered, and Difficulty. Individual exports include User, Email, Started, Completed, and one column for each question.
Use insights to improve content
Use patterns in the data to choose the part of a material that needs review.
Investigate a low completion rate
If learners aren’t finishing:
- Check the activity chart for drop-off patterns.
- Review the average duration to assess the course length.
- Consider breaking into smaller modules.
Investigate low assessment scores
If learners are struggling:
- Review the Questions tab for problem questions.
- Check if content adequately covers tested concepts.
- Consider rewording confusing questions.
Investigate difficult questions
If specific questions have low success rates:
- Review the question wording for clarity.
- Ensure the correct answer is unambiguous.
- Add more supporting content before the assessment.
Investigate low engagement
If learners aren’t starting:
- Review assignment communication.
- Check deadline settings.
- Consider sending reminder notifications.
